Three Indicators of the Best Tennis Racquet

Three Indicators of the Best Tennis Racquet

Article by Greg Christopherson

One of the biggest equipment issues in tennis is deciding which the best tennis racquet is for you. It’s such a vague term, which is often abused by manufacturers, marketing directors, and even tennis coaches! After all–the best racquet for YOU may be substantially different from the best racquet for ME…

You may have seen ads that promise, “this is the best tennis racquet for power” (or spin, or control, etc.). Or you perhaps have heard a coach or sales rep state that a certain company makes the “best tennis racquet”. I’m certain their intentions are good and they can back-up their statements (at least somewhat). But perhaps you should consider the following:

Playing Style: Because racquets differ widely in construction, you can narrow down your choices of the best tennis racquet by factoring-in your game. Are you a power-hitter? Or a touch player? Need more control? Tennis Racquet beam width, materials used and head-size all play an important part.

Mobility, Mechanics, & Maneuverability: These “3 M’s” mean a great deal when selecting the best tennis racquet. Are you as fast as you “used to be”? Or do you need a bit more reach? If you are not as mobile as you should/could be, perhaps a longer racquet (for example) might be a good idea. Are you a beginner, intermediate, or advanced player? Each of these typically has different strokes (mechanics) and the correct racquet will really help. And the ability to quickly move a racquet (groundstroke, volley, return of serve) may assist you in a big way–it seems the balls are coming at you faster than ever these days! Many racquets now are very lightweight yet still provide plenty of “pop”.

Budget: The best, many would think, is the most expensive one! But this is the very far from the truth. Quality tennis racquets can be purchased, new, for well under $ 100. You may wish to try (demo) racquets a different price points. You may be pleasantly surprised–you may discover that your “best tennis racquet” is also the least expensive! (Please note the word “may”!). All joking aside–one should consider one’s budget when shopping and seek models in the appropriate price range (you may even buy 2 or more this way).

The good news is that when you have finished shopping, selected a racquet, and you are on the court playing, you will now be able to tell your opponents “I have the best racquet in the world”–and you won’t be exaggerating! It is the best tennis racquet in the world–for YOU!!
