Why Do LSU Tigers Wear White in Football Games

Why Do LSU Tigers Wear White in Football Games

Article by meliza mateo

LSU Tigers would wear white during their football games because of a tradition that has been started in 1958 by Coach Paul Dietzel.

Unlike college basketball, where the home teams wear white or the lighter-colored jerseys, most NCAA football teams wear their darker colored jerseys to home games. The LSU Tigers is noted for being one of the few to wear white jerseys. Let’s find out how did this tradition started.

Paul Dietzel’s Decision

In 1958, LSU’s coach, Paul Dietzel, decided that the team would be wearing their white jerseys for the home games. They then won the national championship that same year. Believing it was good luck, the team decided to make it a tradition to wear white to their home games.

However, in 1982, new NCAA rules were passed which stated that home teams must wear darker colors in home games, prohibiting LSU from wearing white from 1983 to 1994. It wasn’t until 1995, when LSU was granted permission by the NCAA to be able to continue with their tradition of wearing white.

Gerry DiNardo’s lobbying

In 1995, their new coach, Gerry DiNardo, determined to bring back the tradition of wearing white, took it upon himself to appeal to the NCAA. He personally met members of the Football Rules Committee. His effort has paid off and the LSU team began wearing white every time they have their homes games. This was since 1995. The only stipulation was that the visiting team must agree to wear their darker jersey colors during these games. Ever since, LSU only had to wear their purple jerseys to home games 3 times. (Once was during a game against Vanderbilt in 1996. Vanderbilt refused since they were still angry at DiNardo leaving Vanderbilt to coach LSU.)

In 2009, NCAA amended their rules once more, no longer restricting teams on whether they should wear their lighter-colored jerseys to home games or not. Just as long as teams wore contrasting colors.

Article by Jack T. Jones

South Carolina is still in the running for the SEC East Division title; the Gamecocks would help their cause by breaking through with their second straight win over the Gators as Steve Spurrier’s current team plays host to his former team in Columbia this Saturday.

Florida has won 23 of 31 all-time meetings, including 18 of the last 20. The Gamecocks won last year’s meeting in Gainesville, 36-14, which was their first win at Florida in their last 13 attempts. Florida has won the last two meetings in Columbia, including a 24-14 victory in 2009.

Florida

The Gators improved to 5-0 against unranked opponents after posting a 26-21 home win over Vanderbilt last week. The win broke a four-game losing streak–all against ranked competition. Their 26 points were the most the offense had scored in a game since a 48-10 win over Kentucky in late September.

Both of the Gators’ road losses this year have been to ranked opponents (Auburn and LSU).

The Gator defense ranks 20th nationally in points allowed (20 PPG), giving up 344 yards per game (200 passing, 144 rushing). The unit has recorded 14 sacks and forced seven turnovers, with one returned for a touchdown (Jaye Howard, fumble).

Jon Bostic leads this group with 65 tackles, adding three sacks and one forced fumble. Ronald Powell has four sacks and Matt Elam has two interceptions.

Offensively, the Gators rank 72nd nationally in points scored (26 PPG), while gathering 305 yards per game (175 passing, 130 rushing).

Quarterback John Brantley, who is expected back in the lineup this week, has completed 59 percent of his passes for 1,360 yards and six touchdowns with three interceptions. The offensive line has allowed 18 sacks.

Running back Chris Rainey, plus wide receivers Trey Burton and Jordan Reed, have combined for 56 catches with 639 yards and four TDs to lead the receiving corps.

Rainey and Jeff Demps lead the running game with a combined 1,020 yards and eight TDs.

South Carolina

South Carolina saw its three-game win streak snapped last week in a 44-28 loss at Arkansas. However, the team with one of the easiest schedules in the SEC (not playing LSU or Alabama) feels a game behind Georgia in the East Division.

The Gamecocks are 4-1 at home this year, allowing just 22 points in their last three home dates.

Defensively, the Gamecocks rank 24th in the nation in points allowed (20 PPG), while giving up 285 yards per game (154 passing, 131 rushing).

They have recorded 17 sacks and forced 27 turnovers, with five returned for touchdowns (Melvin Ingram and Antonio Allen, fumbles; Allen and Tevin Taylor, two interceptions).

Allen has 62 tackles with three INTs, three forced fumbles and three recoveries. Ingram and Jadeveon Clowney have 10.5 combined sacks; D.J. Swearinger, Stephon Gilmore and C.C. Whitlock all have three picks each, while Clowney has four forced fumbles.

The Gamecock offense ranks 49th offensively in scoring (30 PPG), while compiling 368 yards per game (188 rushing, 180 passing).

Star running back Marcus Lattimore leads the offense with 818 rushing yards and 10 TDs, but is out for the season with a major knee injury. Freshman Brandon Wilds (51 carries, 233 yards and one touchdown) will fill in during Lattimore’s absence.

Quarterback Connor Shaw is expected in the lineup this week, and he’s completed 63 percent of his passes for 710 yards and six TDs with four INTs. The offensive line has allowed 17 sacks.

Wideout Alshon Jeffery leads the receiving corps with 36 catches for 487 yards and five TDs.
