Trophies are the merit that achievers receive when they best others in competitions, in wit and in capabilities. It is the manifestation of victory and are considered as reminders and souvenirs of success. How trophies came about is traced to ancient times on Grecian and Roman culture wherein the structure of the trophy that we know now is not exactly the original form it used to take.
It has been said that a form of trophy in Ancient Greece was the laurel wreath, which was granted during the Olympics. It has also been said that when warriors went to battle and won a great victory by defeating other clans, they created trophies from dilapidated bodies in the battlefield as a tribute to the gods. They structured the captured arms and severed heads in a way that resembled a warrior in a fighting stance and they would celebrate.
In Ancient Rome, trophies came in the form of money or coins but it has also been said that when warriors won a battle, cities would build columns on mountain tops as a symbol of their triumph.
Cups and chalices were the form of trophies in the Middle Ages. This was in 1600s in the New World. The structure of the cup was usually two-handled and was made of silver. This type of trophy was the structure on succeeding sports events at that time, like horseracing, boat racing and in early automobile racing. At the modern age, the chalice or the cup is still the structure of trophies on most sports events, like baseball, tennis and football, to name a few.
It was later in time that the structure of trophies took on many different forms. Figurines have become an important element of a trophy that defines and elaborates the significance of an award. Most sports events trophies, aside from the chalice or cup, incorporate figurines of sports legends, which also serves as paying tribute to the legend.
Other awards, on the film and music industry, for instance also take on a different structure for their particular trophies. The Grammy’s showcase the gramophone on their trophies to highlight the significance of the equipment in the history of music, while the Hugo award has a spaceship for a figurine. The Academy awards and most film awards have human figurines on their trophies, as a symbol of incomparable talent in the art.
Varying the structure, form and appearance, these trophies may have through the years, it has always been a significant and important treasure of the grantee as a proof of his/her excellence on his field.
