Tennis as we all know is a sport for all ages played between two players (singles) or two teams (doubles). Each player uses a racket that is strung to strike the hollowed ball that is usually covered with felt over the opponents’ court. In different societies around the world, tennis is a very popular sport. It is played at all levels and by all ages. It is one of the most popular Olympic sports. Tennis is one of the few sports that people with disabilities play effectively. A good number of people on wheel chairs engage actively into this sport.

A tennis racquet is a sports implement that consists of a handled frame with an open hoop across which a network of many chords is stretched tightly. The frame of the racket can be made of many different materials including light laminated wood, light steel, aluminum and carbon fiber composites. Wood still makes the highest number of rackets today and especially those used by professionals. The strings on the other hand are made of synthetic materials like polyamides and nylon.

When buying a racquet for their kids, many parents find it challenging to make the correct choice amidst all these options. The most valuable thing, however, is to decide on what racquet best fits their child’s age. Length is one of the most important factors when it comes to making the choice. As a general principle, a kid should use a racquet that he/she can comfortably handle. This will encourage the junior player to develop smooth long strokes that utilize both good weight transfer and movement of the other larger muscles of the body.

A small racquet encourages excessive wrist and elbow action which in the long run might result in harming the junior player’s strokes and arm. There are standard guidelines for age and racquet size. The parent should however adjust accordingly when choosing the right racquet size for a child’s racquet. For instance, if the size of an 8 year old child is the same as that of a 10 year old, then the parent should choose the racquet for the 10 year old. The parent should move up one size, or probably two to adjust for exceptionally high strength. Below are the guidelines.

0-4: 19″4-5: 21″6-7: 23″8-10: 25″10-12: 26″12 up: adult size

Adjusting down for lack of strength is never necessary. Parents should encourage their kids to play tennis with the best tennis racquet racquets designed for their age. There might be overlaps in the above chart with ages 4, 10, and 12, but when kids are at these ages, either size is likely to be suitable. But as a general rule, it is advisable for the parent to go for the bigger racquet when in doubt.
