Boise State Football: Broncos Big Favorites Against TCU Saturday
Article by Jack T. Jones
TCU and Boise State have met three previous–all in bowl games, with Boise winning the first meeting 34-21 in the 2003 Fort Worth Bowl.
This just might be one of the more anticipated matchups not featuring one of the “Big Six” conferences. The game is being tabbed as a defacto Mountain West Conference championship. The Horned Frogs are moving to the Big 12 next year, while Boise is considering a move into the Big East as a football-only member.
TCU
TCU has won four straight games, the most recent a 31-20 win at Wyoming last week. The Frogs are just nine points away from being undefeated, losing 50-48 to Baylor in the opener and then dropping a 40-33 OT decision to SMU.
Historically, TCU is 3-1 in its last four games against top-five teams and has won 21 straight conference games dating back to 2008.
TCU is a very explosive offensive team in 2011, ranking eighth nationally in points scored per game (42), while producing 452 yards per contest (228 rushing, 224 passing).
There is a three-headed hydra leading the rushing attack: Waymon James, Matthew Tucker and Ed Wesley, who have combined for 1,712 yards and 16 touchdowns, averaging 6.8 yards per carry between them.
Casey Pachall has completed 69 percent of his passes for 1,940 yards and 19 TDs with just five interceptions.
Josh Boyce is the top receiver for the Frogs, recording 46 catches for 704 yards and six scores.
The defense is also strong, however, ranking 34th nationally in points allowed (22 per game) while surrendering 349 yards of offense (225 passing, 124 rushing).
This unit has recorded 19 sacks and forced 16 turnovers, with one being converted into a score (Tank Carder, interception).
Five players have between 44 and 47 tackles this year, led by Tekerrien Cuba with 47 (plus two forced fumbles). Carter, Johnny Fobbs and Kenny Cain have each recorded 46 stops (combining for one sack, three interceptions and a fumble recovery). Stansly Maponga has six sacks, four forced fumbles and two recoveries.
James and Greg McCoy both have kickoff returns for TDs this year, with McCoy averaging 29 yards per return and James 36.
Boise State
Boise picked up a two-touchdown road victory over No. 19 Georgia in their opener and hasn’t been challenged since, winning six games by 20 or more points and two by 50. Boise State has won 35 straight home games (the longest active streak in the nation by 14 games) and is 72-2 on the blue turf since 2000.
The Broncos are formidable offensively, ranking seventh in the country in points scored (44 pg) while compiling 479 yards of offense per outing (295 passing, 183 rushing).
Heisman Trophy candidate Kellen Moore completes 74 percent of his passes for 2,229 yards and 29 TDs with just five INTs. His offensive live has allowed just four sacks all season.
Seven players have 13 or more catches, with three boasting 32 or more: Matt Miller has 39 grabs for 433 yards and six TDs, Tyler Shoemaker has 33 grabs for 601 and 11 scores and Mitch Burroughs has 32 receptions for 340 yards and one score.
Running back Doug Martin, listed as day-to-day this week (leg) and has 756 rushing yards with nine TDs (5.1 YPC).
While the offense gets most of the headlines, the defense is strong as well, ranking 12th nationally in points allowed (17 pg) and giving up just 303 yards per game (163 passing, 140 rushing). The unit has posted 16 sacks and forced 17 turnovers, with one turned in for a score (Hunter White, fumble).
Five players have between 30 and 40 tackles, led by George Iloka with 40 (plus a forced fumble), Byron Hout with 38 stops (one forced fumble and a blocked kick) and Shea McClellin with 35 (five sacks, one INT and one kick block). T Crawford has 5.5 sacks, Jerrell Gavins has three picks and White has two blocked kicks, as the Broncos have seven blocks this year.
The Boise State TCU spread shows the Broncos favored by 15 points, while the total (over/under) is set for 58.5 points. Find out who our NCAA football handicappers are taking in this game and more this weekend by visiting BetFirms.
